Porch Lights On: Celebrating One Year at The 1923
The inviting front porch at The 1923, where guests can slow down, enjoy a cup of coffee, and experience the timeless charm of historic Live Oak, Florida.
One Year of The 1923
One year ago, we unlocked the front door of The 1923 for the first time as hosts — hearts pounding a little, hoping we'd gotten everything right.
We hadn't, of course. No first year ever goes perfectly. But what happened over the next twelve months surprised us in the best possible way.
We expected guests. We didn't expect how much they would bring with them.
An author who needed a week of silence to finish her book. A construction crew who worked long days building something meaningful in our community and needed a real home to come back to at night. A family of twelve who hadn't been in the same room in four years — and spent three days around our dining table remembering why they love each other. Musicians and festival crews rolling in for SOSMP weekends. Old friends who hadn't seen each other in a decade, up until 2 AM catching up on the back porch.
We had no idea we were signing up to be a small part of so many different stories.
What We've Learned
Running a 5-bedroom historic vacation home in Live Oak, Florida teaches you things fast.
We learned that what groups need most isn't amenities on a checklist — it's space to actually be together. The 1923 sleeps up to 10 guests, and what makes that different from booking a block of hotel rooms isn't just the number. It's everything that happens in between.
The dining room table where someone's grandmother made biscuits at 6 AM while the rest of the house slowly woke up. The front porch that turns into a two-hour conversation every single evening. The living room big enough for the whole crew to pile in and watch the game, or argue about which springs to hit first, or just sit together without anyone disappearing to a separate room down a hallway they'll never see each other in.
That's what a historic group rental gives you that a hotel never will — a home where the shared spaces do the work.
We also learned that the best hosting happens before guests ever arrive. The springs guide we send every guest? Those are the ones we go to — Ichetucknee on a Tuesday morning when the crowds are gone, the swimming hole locals don't post about, the put-in spot on the Suwannee that takes your breath away. The restaurant tips aren't from a travel blog. They're from thirty-plus years of living in Suwannee County and knowing exactly where to eat.
That's the part you can't get from a booking platform. That's the part that's just ours to give.
